“A book is a dream you hold in your hands.”
Books are indeed a uniquely portable magic-such is the power that they possess. They transcend reality and enable the reader to enter the realm of dreams. Be it the spectacular magic of Harry Potter, the wisdom of age-old classics or the complicated theories of Quantum Physics, each book has something unique to offer and yet, in all its diversity, the world of literature imbibes in each and every person, the zeal to read as much as possible.
Being cognizant of the significance of books in our lives, the Levelled Reading Programme has been initiated for the learners of Grade III – V. To have valuable insights for the same, a workshop was organised on 25th May , wherein Ms. Dalbir Kaur, a voracious reader and the Founder of One Up Library, imparted wisdom to the students. Ms. Kaur equipped the students with the necessary observational skills required while reading books, such as taking note of the setting, the characters, the plot progression, the perspectives and the lessons, at various phases of the book. The qualities of a ‘Reading Champion’-being responsive, responsible and believing in the cause-indubitably inspired the students. Independent Reading too was emphasized upon, to act as an impetus for learners to make their own choices and to inculcate autonomy and self-actualisation on the attainment of goals.
The interactive session with Ms. Kaur, who conversed with the learners about their favourite books and genres, has left the learners really awaiting the commencement of the Programme in July. 60 books, with a myriad of themes, will be allotted to each classroom and each student will be assigned various books as per the rotation system. Students will be required to keep a record of all that they have read, which will make them recognise the importance of being systematic and consistent. Consequently, the learners will have a one-on-one conference with the teacher, where they will share their perceptions and the manner in which reading has improved their lives. Books are a celebration of the wonderful journey which a reader undertakes, which is why there will be a ‘Celebration’ at the end-of reading goals, reading volume and so on.
We at Lotus Valley firmly believe that this will enable learners to experience the joy of reading as an essential activity.
