"Art is not meant to change the world in practical terms, but to transform perceptions. It has the power to alter the way we view our surroundings and create meaningful analogies."
Embracing the innovative blend of art and activism known as ‘Artivism’, Lotus Valley International School, Gurugram, in collaboration with One Up Library, Bookstore & Learning Lab, hosted an inspiring session with Nikkolas Smith, the acclaimed New York Times bestselling author of 'The Artivist', on Monday, 19th February 2024. This captivating workshop for Grades I-IV provided a unique opportunity for learners to engage directly with Smith, delving into how art can serve as a potent instrument for societal transformation. The workshop was opened by Director-Principal Ms. Anita Malhotra, with the Director of One Up Library, Ms. Dalbir Kaur, also in attendance.
The session showcased Smith recounting his personal journey, followed by a reading from his book and a discussion on leveraging art to confront and address social injustices. The workshop reached a high point as students relished the chance to personalize the protagonist of Smith's book through various digital filters and features, culminating in a personal book signing session with the author. A lively Q&A segment wrapped up the event, leaving participants inspired and informed.
This ‘Artivism’ workshop not only highlighted the transformative potential of art in advocating for social change but also underscored the school’s commitment to fostering creative and empathetic thinking among its students.
